The Foothills Salvage and Recycling Society (FSRS) has donated $180,000 to 25 local non-profit organizations.
General manager Gabriela Zuniga said the funds come from generous donations the Foothills Thrift Store receives from the community.
“Donated items are sorted and sold in our store,” said Zuniga. “It’s also a wonderful way to keep items out of the landfill while supporting and giving back to the community that makes it all possible.”
Each year, FSRS accepts applications from non-profit organizations, which are carefully reviewed. Zuniga said the society identifies organizations where it can make the greatest impact.
“Our focus is on supporting essential services, including food banks, lunch programs, and other initiatives that help individuals and families meet their basic needs in the community,” she said.
This year, FSRS is supporting the following organizations through its 2025 donation program:
- Okotoks Food Bank
- Oilfields Food Bank
- High River Food Bank Salvation Army
- Food for Thought
- Society of St. Vincent de Paul
- Rowan House
- Heaven Can Wait Animal Rescue
- Pound Rescue
- Foothills Hospice Society
- Solace Grief Support
- United Church School Lunch Program
- Daydreams ELCC
- Opening Gaits Therapeutic Riding
- Diamond Valley Pastoral Charge
- Wildrose Community Connections
- It Takes a Village
- Okotoks Public Library
- Sheep River Library
- High River Library
- High River Handi Bus
- Foothills Immigration Society
- Sheep River Health Trust
- FAIM
- Sheppard Family Park
- Okotoks Family Resource Centre
Zuniga encouraged the community to continue supporting FSRS by donating items to the store.
“By choosing to shop with us, you are helping give pre-loved items a new life,” she said. “Thrifting not only reduces waste but also teaches future generations the importance of reusing, recycling, and making sustainable choices.”
